Sensory Motor Enhancement

A novel interface technology, developed initially as an alternative to EMG for prosthetic control is being explored for use as a means to allow superior user control of assistive technology. This work is based on the measurement of the changes in the shape of the skin directly over a muscle as that muscle contracts. These changes are the direct result of muscle activity and have been shown to correlate well with EMG recordings. The use of this technology may offer EMG equivalent control signals without the need for electrodes, which are limiting factors in routine use in assistive technology.
